Frequently Asked Questions About Studying in China

    Is studying in China expensive?
Studying in China is not usually very expensive, but it depends a lot on the location and the type of institution.

Prices for studying in a first-tier city (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou) at a private institution are not very different from other international destinations. However, choosing a public school in a third- or fourth-tier city can be very affordable.

Is it easy to get a scholarship to study in China?
Getting a scholarship to study in China is quite feasible if you have the right support.

Although it is possible to apply independently for a scholarship from the Chinese government, the chances of success are rather low. If you meet the requirements, applying through an accredited intermediary institution usually guarantees success.

Do you need a visa to study in China?
Yes, to study in China you need an X2 visa (for stays shorter than 6 months) or an X1 visa (for stays longer than 6 months).

In contrast, in Taiwan no visa is required for study stays of less than 3 months for many nationalities (including Spanish).

What are the requirements for obtaining a student visa for China?
The basic requirements for obtaining a Chinese student visa are as follows:

    • Completed and signed visa application form of the People’s Republic of China
    • Passport with more than 6 months validity and at least 2 blank pages
    • Passport photo (48mm x 33mm)
    • Admission letter from the educational institution
    • JW201 or JW202 form from the Ministry of Education of China
    • Round-trip flight ticket (only for X2 visa)

Depending on nationality and/or place of application, additional documents may be required, such as proof of financial solvency.

Can you study in China with a tourist visa?
No, it is illegal to enter the country with a visa that does not match the real purpose of your stay in China.

Studying in China with a tourist visa may result in fines or even legal consequences.

What restrictions are in place for students in China due to the Covid-19 pandemic?
Like most Asian countries, China is currently closed to foreign students, except for students of certain nationalities such as South Korea.

It is possible that as vaccination progresses, the country will gradually open to certain nationalities with high vaccination rates and low incidence. However, it is very likely that this will not happen until the end of 2021.
